Why UGC ads work, and how to make them without a shoot
UGC (user-generated content) ads look like a normal person recommending a product to a friend. They work because they don't look like ads. People trust a face and a real-sounding voice more than a logo and a slogan, and on TikTok, Reels and Shorts they blend into the feed instead of standing out as an interruption.
The problem with hiring creators
Real creators are great, but the process is slow and expensive when you need volume:
| Hiring creators | AdVideoLab UGC mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per video | Often $100 to $500+ per creator video | A 10 s 720p video is 220 credits |
| Time to first video | Days to weeks (briefing, shipping product, filming, edits) | Minutes |
| Variations | Each one costs extra | Change the brief and render again |
| Languages | A new creator per market | 9 languages with lip-sync |
| Product needed | You ship a sample | A photo is enough |
Creators are still worth hiring for your best-performing concepts. AI UGC is how you find those concepts cheaply first. Our cost breakdown goes deeper.
What makes a UGC ad convincing
- A specific person. Age, style and setting that match your buyer. In AdVideoLab you can save these as personas so every video uses the same "creator".
- A real setting. A bathroom shelf, a car, a kitchen counter. Not a white studio.
- One honest reason. "It's the only one that doesn't make my skin tight" beats a list of five benefits.
- Natural speech. Contractions, short sentences, a pause. Write with AI paces the voice-over to about two and a half words per second so it doesn't sound rushed.
Three UGC formats worth testing
| Format | The opening line | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| The recommendation | "Okay, I need to tell you about this." | Most products, cold audiences |
| The problem-solver | "If your hair does this in the rain..." | Products that fix a clear annoyance |
| The honest review | "I didn't expect much, but..." | Higher-priced products, sceptical buyers |
How it works in AdVideoLab
- Upload your product photo. A clear shot where the product is easy to see. Packaging with a readable label works best.
- Choose UGC mode and a persona, or describe the creator you want.
- Write the brief or click Write with AI. It looks at your photo and your brand voice and writes the scene, the camera, and what the creator says, timed to the length you picked.
- Render. You get an MP4 in 9:16 (or another ratio) with the creator speaking your script in the language you chose.
If a render fails, the credits come back automatically.
