Making Instagram Reels ads that feel native
Reels ads sit between organic Reels from people your customers follow. The ads that work look like they could be one of those posts: a real-looking person, natural light, a clear product moment. Anything that looks like a TV spot gets swiped.
The specs
| Setting | Use this | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 | Reels and Stories both use the full vertical screen |
| Resolution | 1080 x 1920 | Upload at least 720 x 1280 |
| Length | 10 to 20 seconds for most product ads | Reels allows longer, but attention drops fast |
| Captions | Burned in or Instagram's own | Many people watch Reels muted in public |
| Music | Only licensed audio | Use Meta's sound collection for ads, not trending songs |
Meta updates placements and limits regularly. Check Meta's Business Help Centre for the current Reels ad specs.
The safe zone on Reels
Instagram overlays the account name, caption, audio label and buttons. Meta's own guidance is to keep text and logos out of roughly the top 14% and the bottom 35% of the frame, plus a small margin on each side. In practice: keep the product and any text in the middle band of the screen.
What makes a Reels ad feel native
- One person, one room. A bathroom, a kitchen, a desk. Familiar places read as real.
- Natural light. Window light beats a ring light for trust.
- Talk like a friend. "Okay, I have to show you this" beats "Introducing the all-new".
- Show the product in the first two seconds. Even a Reels viewer who likes you won't wait.
- End on one clear action. Shop now, see the colours, get the bundle. Only one.
Reels vs. TikTok: what to change
| Reels | TikTok | |
|---|---|---|
| Tone | A bit more polished, aspirational | Rawer, more humour |
| Hook | Visual and aesthetic | Problem or surprise |
| Text on screen | Short, stylish | Bigger, more direct |
| Best categories | Beauty, fashion, home, wellness | Almost anything with a demo |
The same 9:16 video usually runs on both. If you have budget for two versions, change the first two seconds and the voice-over, not the whole ad.
