How to make a TikTok ad that people watch past the first second
TikTok ads live or die in the first second. People scroll with their thumb already moving, so your opening frame has to earn the second one. The good news: the formats that win on TikTok are cheap to make. A person holding your product and talking to camera beats a polished studio spot most of the time.
The specs that matter
| Setting | Use this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 9:16 | Fills the screen. Square or horizontal looks like an ad from somewhere else |
| Resolution | 1080 x 1920 | 720 x 1280 works; anything lower looks soft on a phone |
| Length | 9 to 15 seconds | Long enough for a hook, a demo and an offer |
| File | MP4, H.264 | What AdVideoLab exports |
| Sound | On | Most viewers watch with sound; captions help the rest |
TikTok changes its ad specs from time to time, so check the TikTok Ads Manager help centre before a big launch.
Keep the important bits in the safe zone
The app draws buttons, a caption and a call-to-action bar over your video. On a 1080 x 1920 frame, keep your product, face and on-screen text out of these areas:
| Area | Roughly | What sits there |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom | Lowest 20% of the frame | Caption, username, CTA button |
| Right side | About 140 px wide | Like, comment, share buttons |
| Top | A thin band | "Sponsored" label and navigation |
When you write a brief in AdVideoLab, say where the product should sit ("product in the centre of the frame, upper half"). The model follows framing instructions well, and Write with AI adds them for you.
Three hooks that work for product ads
- Show the problem in one shot. A cracked phone case, a greasy pan, frizzy hair in the rain. People recognise their own problem before they read a word.
- Start mid-action. The product is already being used when the video begins. No logo, no intro.
- Say the surprising thing first. "I stopped buying face wipes because of this." A line that makes someone want the next sentence.
Which AdVideoLab mode to use
| Goal | Mode | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Cold audience, trust building | UGC creator | A person talks about the product on camera, lip-synced in 9 languages |
| Show texture, detail, quality | Single image | Close-ups and camera moves around your product |
| Show a result | Transition | Your first frame turns into your last frame |
| Several products or angles | Reference | One video composed from a set of photos |
A test plan for your first week
Make three videos from the same product photo, each with a different hook. Run them in one ad group with the same budget. After two or three days, keep the one with the best hold rate (the share of people still watching at three seconds) and make three new versions of that hook. That loop is where AI video pays off: a new variation costs a few minutes and a few credits, not a new shoot.
Not sure what to say yet? The free ad script generator writes three TikTok scripts from your product page.
